And some would say rude. To string you along for months of posts whining about how long my remodel was taking, and then finishing it, and then quietly, selfishly hoarding all the finished pictures to myself while I cried sweet tears of relief in my new craft room. It is finally done. Completely and with no asterisks saying Chris still needs to do a few more things. Done done. The only thing still not done is our final invoice which hasn't come yet. We're not saying anything in case he forgets about it since we were a little job for them and we get our remodel at 50% off! Just kidding. I'd say something, Mama raised me a little better than that.

So I guess you want to see some pictures? I haven't finished styling everything yet, that takes time and consideration! And a trip to the flower mart for an awesome hanging fern for the range wall by the window and big fiddle leaf fig plant for the office. Then the pictures will truly be blog-worthy. But I'm getting some hate mail from you dear readers so I gotta give you some relief. Just a note though, these were taken with my phone and I'm not Bethany Nauert or anything so don't give me crap for the bad pictures. Here you go... We'll start with the craft room/office/playroom.

Yes, I hung my creepy French clown vintage needlepoint because I love it and it hasn't made Elsa cry yet. I was going to get it framed but I kind of love seeing the stitching fabric and that it's stretched out and askew. Adds to the vintage charm me thinkest. IT'S MY ROOM!

I'm pretty sure the smartest decision for this room was ditching the bookcase that bisected the room (it's in Jeff's studio now) and adding the high gloss white armoire with sliding doors to house our books and my craft crap. It's a Pax wardrobe from IKEA, was annoying to build, but it's perfect for this room.

My desk is flanked with stacked boxes of my fabric hoards. Incessant reminders that I need to bust out the sewing machine again and get making.

My Sew for Victory poster is at the framers right now and we still have more art to hang, but we're finding that we want to keep things a little more bare in the new spaces. The paint color (Swiss Coffee by Ben Moore) is the perfect warm white and we put it everywhere. Eggshell for the walls and doors, semi-gloss for the trim. Of course this is making me KILL to put it in the living room too now! It makes everything bright and big and happy.

The laundry closet is a tiiiight fit but it works, and the machines are fantastic. It's been so long since I've washed clothes in a nice machine with a bunch of settings! My aunt is going to gasp, but I even washed a load of my delicates (she works at Vicky's Secret) on the delicate cycle and then hung them to dry and they came out great. I HATE hand washing clothes so that alone made this whole remodel worth it.

We also had the painters paint the heater cover in white to make it less obtrusive (it was just a gray metal before).

Let's talk a minute too about these floors. THESE FLOORS! I love the cork. So much. Except the cat puke camouflages identically with the floors so I have to get down low and scan around every few days to make sure there aren't any hidden yaks. Luckily the boys don't puke as much as Lily Mae the Bulimic Siamese (God rest her soul) so it's not that big of an issue. It's lovely to walk on, always looks clean, and wine glasses just bounce right off of it without even a chip! Don't ask how we know that. It's great. It was a pain in Don's ass to install (the seams curled up when the adhesive dried so he had to sink about 3 million little brads into them to keep them down- totally invisible though) so I'm not sure how easily I'd recommend the BuildDirect product we purchased. I love the pattern of the cork though.

And our goth bathroom! So hard to photograph because it's tiny, but this is about it. Matte black chalkboard walls that nobody better chalk up (I like it just like this) and the gold accents and shiny white toilet/sink coordinate perfectly with the kitchen.

Ugh, I wish I was a better photographer so you could really see the greatness in here. You get the idea.
Elsa is slowly breaking down my resolve and I'm allowing the magnet letters to stay on the refrigerator. Just adds to the lived in charm of the kitchen I guess. I still want some art piece above the sink window, but something small and not too colorful.

My kitchen-warming present from Jodi! A sweet little spiky air plant in a gold geometric planter. Perfect for this corner.

We're trying to keep the window ledge somewhat clear so the boys can sit up here and bask. Jeff sealed the butcher block counters with a matte polyurethane that was *almost* dry when the first cat jumped up there. We have really faint kitty toe prints in the finish but I kind of love them.
My favorite things about the new kitchen are the Delta Trinsic champagne bronze faucet and matching sink flange, the Ikea Domsjo sink, the soft-close cabinets drawers and doors, and the beveled tile with black grout. That's a lot of favorites.

I'm not sold on the LED light bulbs we put in the overhead lights, they make it feel a little strange in there somehow, like you're in a school auditorium or something, but they last like 86,000 hours so that kind of makes them worth it. We have our coffee station set up on the buffet, with coffee cups and all the accessories needed in the cabinet below, which is just one example of how functional the space is for us. There is just enough room for everything (no room for anything more though so no more kitchen towels Sue!) and everything is in perfect reach of where it should be. Working in this kitchen is a pure pleasure now.

Livhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14317949318871570517noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5385087340316373121.post-24835504355077131792014-06-13T09:22:00.001-07:002014-06-13T09:22:46.150-07:00Day 53- PAINT.We're getting close. Sooooo close. We were close last week before we left for Paso Robles and the contractor taunted us with promises of completion while we were away. It did not happen. Shocker. And it basically took another week to get a small list of nit-picky things done (replace the sink flange with the new one to match the faucet, baseboards in the utility closets, fix a weird gap in the new window sill, and fix the laundry closet light that wasn't working). Chris knocked all of them out yesterday, but it was a week of "I'll be there tomorrow"'s and then not showing up before he finally did and took care of business.

So the VERY last things still on the list before we can stick a fork in this sucker:

Robert the cabinet guy returns tomorrow to finish the filler pieces on three cabinets (between cabinet and wall), and the toe kick on the pantry. This is a weird IKEA thing- they sell 6" legs for the cabinets if you want your counters higher or need to boost up a cabinet to sit in line with an upper cabinet (as in our pantry case) but they don't sell 6" plinth for the toe kicks, only 4". So you need to MacGuyver it. Dumb Swedes.

PAINT EVERYTHING. The guys arrived early this morning and covered everything in plastic and I *think* will be painting everything today. They are supposed to come back tomorrow when Robert is here to do touch-ups, but I think that means everything will get at least two coats today. I WAY underestimated the paint we'd need, because I guessed based on what Jeff and I used rolling the other rooms. These guys are using sprayers though which I think uses more paint. Ah well. Add it to the contingency budget I guess.

Transitions from cork to wood floors. We were hoping to get the floors entirely flush throughout the house but it just didn't work out. Barely. So we needed to buy some matching reducer pieces in the same cork which Don will come back to install when they arrive sometime next week. At the same time, he's going to rip up the crappy tile job in our main bathroom and replace it with the leftover cork we have. That tile job is a whole 'nuther post. Don convinced us we got screwed from the flooring company that did it and we should file a complaint with the contractor's licensing board to get a full refund. So we did, and we're waiting to see where that goes, if anywhere.

And then of course styling!! I can't wait to hang new curtains, put up the art, set up my desk, put everything away in the new wardrobe cabinet Lynne and I are going to build tonight (did I forget to mention that in my dinner invite Lynne? I'll still make you the fried egg risotto. Jodi dodged another IKEA building bullet.) and bring in some plants. I want to trick Jeff into thinking all that stuff is fun and his Father's Day present but haven't figured out how exactly to do that.

So a lot of words, and no pictures because we are SO close to pretty and complete pictures that I would SO much rather show you. Please stay tuned.

The cork is looking awesome. I love how it looks and feels, and goes with the other finishes. Don says he's having a love/hate relationship with this cork, and it's a little bit of a struggle. He also loves the look, that it's eco-friendly and all that jazz, but putting it down is a little bit of a bitch. They're pretty thin (3/8") and when you put the adhesive on them (you roll it on the back of the tile and on the floor, let both dry for 15-20 minutes to get hella tacky, and then put it down) the edges turn up ever so slightly. So when it's down on the floor, the seams kind of come up a tad. Don has a special little tool that rolls over the seams and pushes them down, but it's time consuming. He thinks that as we walk on the floor too, that will just press them down even more and over time it will become seamless. I don't mind how it looks now, the seams are barely noticeable, but he's a perfectionist so it's taking longer than we thought.

But the floors in the kitchen are done, and he's working on the hallway, bathroom, and laundry room today because the plumbers are coming tomorrow morning to install all the appliances, toilet, and faucets! Hallelujah.

And yesterday Don finished up the last section of tile and all the grout! I really love that black grout.
You can catch some glimpses of the brass outlet plates and pendant lamps that were installed, but I'll take better pictures of them today in the daylight, and once the range hood installation is done. The window casings are also supposed to go up today so more finishing touches getting us closer to the end!

The painters come on Monday to do everything, but Jeff and I may have to paint the laundry room and bathroom ourselves tonight while they're empty. I don't think Jeff knows about that yet. At least they're small rooms...

Livhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14317949318871570517noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5385087340316373121.post-81148067526498795452014-05-27T18:56:00.000-07:002014-05-27T18:56:00.727-07:00Day 35- It's a-grout time.I got that terrible pun from Ruben.

Don was such a super star today! He finished tiling the backsplash on the sink wall, grouted the tile on the range wall, arranged for the dry wallers to come over to fix the doorway they thought was going to have casings (which was our contractor's job but that would mean waiting until like Friday to have them come), and ground down the subfloor to prep it for cork tomorrow!

That tile makes me giddy. I love it so much.

And the black grout looks great! I kind of thought it'd be a higher contrast, and more noticeable, but I actually think it's kind of subtle. Not as graphic as I had in my mind but I love it.

Here's the doorway they had to bump out a bit (our original cabinets weren't the modern-day standard depth of 24" so the counters stuck out past the doorway) and now it's smooth and matches the other doorway in the hall leading to the sewing room/playroom/office. I'm so glad we caught them in time and stopped them from putting casings on this doorway. It wouldn't have matched the other one and would have looked strange. Don is going to tile that little section of the wall tomorrow too so it wraps around.

And the floors look all gnarly like that because they are now perfectly smooth, level and ready to accept some cork!

So cork tomorrow in the kitchen, then toe kicks and baseboards and appliances in the kitchen, and cork in the rest of the reno space on Thursday I think? Then if dreams do come true, the plumber will hook up the bathroom, faucets and laundry machines on Friday and paint will go up! How's that for ambitious? If we can get appliances installed this week though, I will be over the moon.Livhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14317949318871570517noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5385087340316373121.post-10842109702123717222014-05-22T21:21:00.001-07:002014-05-22T21:21:41.662-07:00ONE MONTH. But we got tile!Today was an exciting day, coming home to finished cabinets and one wall of tile!

I am so tickled pink about my gold hardware! It looks so good against the black cabinets and the butcher block keeps it from looking too fancy. Cause y'all know we ain't fancy folk.

The three slabs of butcher block were the perfect amount, and I'm so glad we used the rest of the slab from the buffet on the window ledge above the sink. The tile will go on this wall too, also up 18" wrapping around on the right to the doorway and up to the fridge on the left.

The buffet is going to hold our serving dishes, and dinner party goodies. It'll de-clutter the dining room... or give me more room to buy more stuff! Don't tell Jeff.

By the way, we're obviously having toe kicks so you don't see those ugly plastic legs. The cork will run up to the legs and then the toe kicks will run down onto it.

Look how pretty our beveled subway tile is!! We used white Schluter trim (really thin metal that wraps the edge of the tile) and I'm happy we did that instead of the 2x6" bullnose surface trim tile. It just seems sharper this way. And cheaper! I'm so frugal. Black grout comes next week and it's going to bring it all together. I can't wait to see that with the black range hood and shiny white range installed!

Such texture! Don did an amazing job, and my inner Rainman is so happy the middle section is exactly five tiles wide. 177 tiles total, 177.

I came home on the later side today so the lighting wasn't great, but I'll post some more later with pictures of the cabinet insides. Our custom cabinet installer was super impressed with the quality of the Ikea cabinets and hardware, and said Lynne and I (and 5% Jodi) did an awesome job building them. YEAH!

Flooring early next week (after the holiday dang it, the only time I've ever been annoyed at a Monday holiday!) and then appliance install right after so we can have a functioning kitchen and laundry room while they finish up the last bits. Can't wait to see that cork down!
And the butcher block halfway cut and placed! And my sink put in!

I love that sink so much, even the cabinet guy said it was the perfect sink. Ikea is batshit crazy for discontinuing it. At least I think they did. It's still not in stock in any Ikeas and there are rumors they had problems with the manufacturer so they just cut it from their line. Who knows. I'm so thankful that we bought the kitchen early though and I snagged one of the last ones!

The cabinet boxes all come in white or "birch effect" but they have black finishing panels that will cover the exposed white on the outside, and the cabinet doors all completely cover the white in the front so when these are finished, you won't see any white until you open the cabinet and see the inside.

I'm not sure why the old faucet is still there, hopefully they can pull that out tomorrow. The beveled subway tile will go over that area because our new faucet will be mounted in the sink. The window box ledge will be the butcher block too. Can't wait to see that in against the tile.

The tall cabinet on the left will be our pantry. It has 5 pull out drawers, plenty of space for our dry goods. The cabinet above the fridge will hold our new microwave. We have a pretty range hood for over the stove so the microwave needed to be a countertop model. We didn't want to ugly up our gorgeous new wood countertops with a big microwave though, so this was the only other place to locate it. It'll be a little awkward having it over the fridge, Jeff can reach it easily but I'll have to use a step stool. No biggie.

That right section of the counters still needs to be cut, that little section coming off will make a nice cutting board though!

And our cute little buffet! The slab of butcher block was ripped already into two pieces but needs to be trimmed on the end. One of those pieces will go over the sink on the window ledge, and the extra chunks cut off will become cute little cheese serving boards.

I spent Friday night and Saturday morning opening the 87 packages to assemble all the cabinet drawers. I think Robert the cabinet guy will put these in tomorrow before the doors go on.

So cabinets and counters and hardware tomorrow, then tile and flooring start on Tuesday!Livhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14317949318871570517noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5385087340316373121.post-11379488907784582362014-05-16T13:41:00.001-07:002014-05-16T13:44:38.275-07:00Day 25The drywall is finally done, textured and primed. The guys were here early this morning painting, pulling up the rest of the laminate in the back room, and cleaning the spaces up. It feels a lot better in there now, and in the backyard where most of the crap pile went into Bagster #2. I wish they scheduled the pick up for it today to get it off our driveway, but the crane will be here on Monday to haul it away.

Tomorrow the cabinet guy will be here at noon and will work late hanging the cabinets and hopefully cutting and installing the butcher block countertops. Jeff and I will build the cabinet drawers on Sunday, and maybe even install the doors! We'll see. Then lovely Don arrives bright and early Monday morning to start the tile and flooring and the end will be in sight.

I seriously cannot wait. I barely had the patience to wait until April to start this thing, but a month of construction without a kitchen and laundry room, with a two year old!? It's been rough. Mostly on Jeff since he's here with Elsa during the day dealing with it, but coming home from a full day of work and a sucky commute due to never-ending 405 construction traffic to a torn apart and dusty house is no picnic. Plus our Dyson vacuum broke, we had a main line sewer clog, and it was in the hundred's all this week. Awesommmmmmeeee... It's still stupid hot, but the vacuum was under warranty and fixed in 15 minutes at the surprisingly great repair shop, and our regular plumbers fixed the clog less expensively than we were dreading, so I'm not yet ready to take a hot bath and open up a few veins. Check in on me again next week though.
I wonder what that grid on the subfloor is all about. They had carpet in here when we moved in, but maybe it was tile before that?
Once the cabinets are in, things will be looking a heck of a lot better in here. Let's hope for some good pictures on Sunday...Livhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14317949318871570517noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5385087340316373121.post-67192581313319746212014-05-12T21:27:00.001-07:002014-05-12T21:27:31.928-07:00Day 21- STILL DRYWALLING.You know what we need? A construction project manager. Our contractor, while being a nice guy that does really quality work, is pretty freaking sucky at communicating with the subcontractors and us. Our drywall guys weren't told that they needed to be done by today to keep the cabinet dude on schedule for tomorrow, to keep our tile guy on schedule for Thursday. So they worked only two hours on Friday, which means they won't be completely done until Wednesday. Cue the dominoes.

A common problem with remodels like ours it seems, is that we're considered a small project. The contractor is going to focus his team on their larger money-making projects, and will kick people over to the small projects when they have time. We hoped that they would just bust us out quickly so they could move on to their next project, but it's impossible to time when they're going to have competing projects. I think? I don't know if you can put a deadline date into a contract like this, with contingencies for unexpected problems that aren't the fault of the construction crew. A designer friend of ours said her contracts have deadlines, where if she goes long, the client gets a discount on the cost, but if she beats the deadline, she gets a price bump. I think that's smart. I should have suggested that before we got started!

Anyways, enough words. More progress pics. From start to finish to remind me of how far we've come.

So it's looking better, right!? Our light shining through the clouds is our wonderful tile and flooring expert, Don Kuskie. He has been so wonderful, coming over to meet with us, talk about the project, helping me to buy the cork and tile supplies, and keeping in touch by phone for progress updates. He was supposed to start our project today (last week?) but promised he is ready and waiting for us when we have the cabinets up and we have the green light for tile and flooring. He said he'd even work nights and on Saturday! He's the best. We'll end on that happy note.

Drywall dust is all up in our business now, and we can see exactly where the cats have been (i.e. everywhere) with their drywall dusted paws. It's like the Family Circus comics where that busy bod kid with the backpack leaves hash marks to show his path of destruction. THANK GOD I got a Dyson vacuum for Mom's day last year. That sucker is working overtime. You know who isn't working overtime? Our construction crew.
So the drywall pieces are up and everything gets taped and mudded tomorrow, which guess what? Means cabinets aren't being installed until next week. I KNEW IT! I wonder if contractors tell you in the bid stage that a project is going to take 2 weeks so you're like "That's not bad at all! Let's do this!" while they're quietly laughing to themselves and saying under their breath "...and up to 14 weeks".
I'm no drywalling expert or anything (I still firmly believe it's made from compressed flour), but should this gap be this big? Are they going to fill that sucker in, or just tape over it? Oh I forgot to mention! We're scrapping the sconces on this wall. I KNOW! My awesome homemade gold tipped bulb sconces! There were a couple reasons for saying buh-bye to them. 1) We didn't have room for a double toggle switch on the wall next to the dining room entrance so they were going to have to be wired on the same toggle as the kitchen pendants. I wanted them to be separate but didn't want another single toggle light switch on the hallway wall just for them. 2) I don't think we need them. The new kitchen pendants will give off plenty of light for this room (especially with the warm LED bulbs I'm putting in them), so the sconces on with the pendants on would be a little much. and 3) Now we can put more art up on this wall and not be restricted to a specific dimension within the sconces. Fingers crossed when the construction bill comes, we'll still have an art budget left! Maybe someone will trade us something awesome for our Friendly Yeti. Jeff wants to get rid of him. :(
With drywall up we can see the real size of the new laundry closet, which is just big enough for the new machines. I'm sad we lost the shelves for this laundry closet but it was the only configuration that would work easily. Luckily we have great storage in this house so adding more was an easy thing to scrap from the plans. Plus look at all this wall real estate for art!

They obviously have some more pieces to put up tomorrow, and I think they're planning to mud tomorrow too, but I've learned not to hold my breath. I'm not even going to say that I was told cabinets will go in on Friday because I don't believe it for a damn second.
It was fun getting to stand in the new bathroom finally, now that there's a floor, and with the walls up it's a lot easier to see what we're working with. It's so little! But totally necessary, and to code so it's not uncomfortably small. Says the 5'4" girl.

We're flip-flopping on the chalkboard walls a little now though, thinking it might be too dusty for the small space, but our contractor says we have a powerful fan in there to suck up the dust so he doesn't think it'll be an issue. We want to go with dark walls regardless, so if the chalk bothers us, we'll just erase the walls and hide the chalk.
Tyr is all up in the construction business. Thor could take it or leave it I think, but both keep leaving dusty little paw prints everywhere. I'm so tempted to hire a cleaning service to come in and do the house top to bottom when this is all over. I was kind of hoping this would be done by Mother's Day so I could trick Jeff into doing it instead while Elsa and I go out for mani/pedis, but I don't think it's happening. Unless HGTV busts in and finishes everything in 48 hours like they do on their shows. How the hell do they do that btw?? Is nothing inspected or given time to dry??
Anyways... stucco repair! They matched it so well with the existing stucco, we won't even need to paint it! Just kidding, it's a little off. It's going to be a bitch to color match, but we'll see what those fancy machines at Home Depot can do.
I was a little worried about how this was going to look with one window being out of line from the other windows on the side of the house, but there are bigger issues in the world to concern myself with.
I really want to plant a bunch of beautiful garden rose bushes under these windows, for a cutting garden so I can have fresh roses in the house constantly, and for another thorny layer to our security system. I would die for peach Juliet or Campanella garden roses, and now need to hunt them down. Not exactly ones you can pick up at Home Depot. Mixed in with some white spray rose bushes and I'll never have to go to the flower mart again! Well, except to pick up my billy balls...Livhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14317949318871570517noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5385087340316373121.post-16631315362145392302014-05-05T21:36:00.000-07:002014-05-05T21:36:23.945-07:00Day 14- No drywall! The drywall got pushed back to tomorrow. *sad face* I was hoping to come home to some new walls, but instead I got a higher window and a bathroom subfloor. Not bad, I'll take it. The plumber had to come back today to fix the gas line pipe for the new range, one of the inspector's requests, so that got checked off the list too. I'm really happy the floor is closed up now (Tyr took a couple brazen expeditions into the crawl space under the house even with all my cat barricades) but now we have some holes in the wall with direct access to the outside. It's all getting patched up tomorrow (tomorrow is drywall day! Promise! Well, maybe.) so baby steps forward.
Stucco repair, pendant light boxes for the kitchen, and day 1 of drywall tomorrow! Cabinets install slated for Thursday, so probably Monday. : /Livhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14317949318871570517noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5385087340316373121.post-38611387910021436542014-05-02T19:00:00.001-07:002014-05-02T19:00:21.101-07:00Inspection- Check! We passed our inspection today after the fixes were made, so drywall starts on Monday, and cabinet installation on Thursday! Big things happening next week! And hopefully more pictures. Stay tuned!Livhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14317949318871570517noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5385087340316373121.post-25013601610299737382014-05-01T09:25:00.002-07:002014-05-01T09:25:55.410-07:00Inspection FAILSo we didn't pass our inspection yesterday. WHOMP WHOMP... But it's actually not bad. The inspector just pointed out a few things that she wanted fixed, and they were small and easy fixes that were for earthquake safety and to protect the new stuff they put in. In my mind, those are things I want them to point out to us to get fixed now to hopefully avoid problems down the road. The plumber isn't available until tomorrow morning for the fixes though so today is a work-free day. They'll fix the issues tomorrow morning and the inspector will come back in the afternoon and hopefully give the sign-off. Then drywall begins on Monday! Just a delay of a few days, and hopefully the last.Livhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14317949318871570517noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5385087340316373121.post-22114610789406659332014-04-28T15:46:00.000-07:002014-04-28T15:46:03.111-07:00Tentative Renovation TimelineFinish up plumbing Monday. The weekend was all about moving gas lines and re-plumbing the laundry rooms/new half-bath, so I don't have very exciting pictures to share of that. What IS exciting however, are the new lighting fixtures I bought!!

I love these both very much, but they weren't on sale, and aren't exactly cheap so I may end up returning them if they're not perfect. I felt spendy this weekend though, probably a mix of boredom, loneliness (Jeff and Elsa come back today!! Finally!), and relief that demo didn't uncover any expensive issues that needed to be repaired (yet). So I did a bit of online retail therapy. It was West Elm's free shipping promotion that did me in. I can always return these to the West Elm store we have down here, at no loss since I didn't have to pay for the $43 shipping.

This mobile chandelier is to replace the fugly ceiling fan in the office/sewing room/playroom. The fan shakes when it's spinning and gives off crappy light and I've wanted to replace it from Day 1. I tried looking for attractive ceiling fans but the only ones I really liked were crazy expensive. This room does get hot, but we have big windows plus the sliding door in here for nice cross breezes, and we have regular table fans we can use. I love this fixture more than I could ever love a ceiling fan and it'll give better light over my sewing table. And if you're feeling crazy, you can tilt the arms and change up the shape:

I think I'm going to have it flush mounted to the ceiling too, instead of hanging like a chandelier, because the ceilings aren't very tall in that room and I think it'll look cool that way. I'll probably drive Robbie crazy having him hold it at all different heights in increments of half an inch before I decide though.

And these beauties!
We have the brushed nickel cover plates in the bathroom to coordinate with the fixtures in there and they really class it up, so I want to do that in the new kitchen too. I'm kind of torn between brushed brass cover plates to match the cabinet hardware, and these white enameled ones I found at West Elm. They're a little chippy though which I can't tell if I like yet or not. I guess I could just buy them, try them out and return them if I'm not into them.

This picture from Schoolhouse Electric though is definitely swaying me towards the brass plates and black outlets/switches. Classy! And I hate cleaning finger smudges off light switches so these come with the added bonus of never having to do that. Is it weird to have these be different in the kitchen and new bath than everywhere else in the house though? What's your vote on the cover plates? White enamel with black outlets/switches, or brass with the black?Livhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14317949318871570517noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5385087340316373121.post-802459992273733752014-04-24T21:22:00.005-07:002014-04-24T21:22:33.854-07:00Day 3

Laundry room! Looks kind of like a phone booth in here now. I'm kind of torn on repainting this entire room. That was my first plan, to go white to match the hallway and kitchen but is that just unnecessary work? The gray paint is still in great shape in the rest of the room, and we'd just need to paint up this closet to make it match. I think we even have some leftover... hm. Decisions.

The guys were here all day again finishing up the framing for this closet and the bumped out wall, and a lot of electrical planning. Poor Robbie had to go under the house and in the attic a bunch of times to locate junction boxes or something like that. Chris drew in where the cabinets are going and thank the sweet baby Jesus, everything fits and my measurements were right.

They cut out the damaged areas of the plaster and I think drywall is only going in those holes down here, and no other wall sections need to come out.

And here's the bumped out wall, with the old wall now gone and the ceiling joists scissored (or something like that. I spend my day working from my laptop in the living room while straining to overhear them talking about the juicy details).
Plumbing tomorrow!

Another good work day! The guys were here early again and made a good chunk of progress. The wall between the new half-bath and kitchen is almost all gone and the framing for the new bumped out wall went up.

The ceiling joists need to be scissored, or something like that, before they can take that wall fully down, giving us an extra 8 inches of length in the new bathroom.

Hey ground under our house, how you doing? Creepy! The cats would SO get lost under here, so they didn't get to explore this time when the workers were done.

It's hard to tell but there are two walls of framing in the back wall of the new bathroom, and all the plumbing and electrical in between them. There is some big old cast iron pipe that doesn't do anything anymore so when the plumber is here on Friday, they're going to see about taking it out, so the extra wall of framing can also come out to buy us another 3 inches or so of bathroom width. In a bathroom this tiny, every inch counts!

They also prepped the window more for moving, but they're going to place the cabinets around sometime tomorrow to check layout and confirm the height we want the window at, before actually moving it.

They also pulled up the flooring which happened to be plywood subfloor, then this vinyl:

Over that vinyl was a thin layer of concrete and then the blue and white vinyl we lived with. Good riddance to it all. I'm not sure what the plan is now with the floors, not sure if they just need to scrape and clean the existing subfloor or put new plywood down over it, but the end goal is cork throughout that is level with the existing hardwood in the dining room and Elsa's room, so no transitions anywhere.

And then the Bagster guys came to haul it all away! Those dumpster bags are amazing. There is an entire kitchen of plaster, solid wood cabinets, concrete and flooring in there and the bag was gone in 10 minutes. Even Tyr was impressed.

Tomorrow is electrical and gas, and then plumbing on Friday!Livhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14317949318871570517noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5385087340316373121.post-62470809379489745272014-04-22T17:53:00.000-07:002014-04-22T17:53:34.418-07:00Demo Day 1 Done!

The demo is *almost* all done, not bad for the first day! They are going to pull up the floors later, and focus on moving the wall between the bathroom and kitchen and the rest of the new framing tomorrow. I think they'll also be moving the window up maybe tomorrow or Thursday?

It's really amazing what two guys can get done in under 8 hours.
They cut out the space for the laundry closet so the framing can go up tomorrow too.

The kitty boys were so curious about the whole thing. I thought they'd be cowering in our bedroom during all of this but they were out and up against that plastic sheeting wanting to know what was going on in their kitchen. After the construction guys were gone, I let them explore a bit but sealed it back up for the night because there's a big hole in the new bathroom that goes I think into the wall cavity or underneath the house that they were sniffing around. Don't worry Jan, I sealed it up tightly and blocked off access with a bunch of heavy boxes so they definitely can't get in.

I was worried that they would find mold, or asbestos, or leaking pipes, or faulty electrical, but once everything was opened up, the guy said everything looked fine and commented on how houses just aren't built as well or as solid as they were back in the day.
Here's Tyr sniffing around that escape route hole. I hissed and he jumped back. Then I blocked it off not only to prevent the pageant cats from going in it, but also for the very un-pageant rats that might come up through it. I'll be very happy when drywall day is here...
Back on for tomorrow at 7:30am! Maybe floors will come out and walls will go up?
Our contractor Chris was here and went through the whole job with the crew and me and he had everything straight so that was good. The city took issue with our doorway openings, insisting they have to be at least 30" wide, which they will be, but just barely. Which in turn impacts our new laundry closet they'll be framing out in the office room. In our plans, we had the stackables facing the back large window, giving a wider and less deep closet. With the space needed for the venting and lines though, it would push the appliances right up against the door, and because we can't narrow any doorways, the framing will just be too tight. So we're rotating it a bit, and the stackables and door to the closet will now face the Friendly Yeti. I'm fine with that revision. It won't leave us room for shelves in the laundry closet, but we are keeping the large cleaning supply cabinets across from the old laundry area (soon to be new half-bath) so we'll just keep all the laundry supplies in there too. It'll work out.

I know you all want to see the mess they've made so far... This is the old laundry room, soon to be half-bath:
Ripping out the old tile was SO LOUD! I'm working in the living room so I can eavesdrop on the workers to hear what they're saying about the state of things, and I overheard them say the tile was the worst part. Once that was out it'd be a cakewalk. We have different definitions of cakewalks not surprisingly.
The boys are holding up pretty well. Elsa's bedroom door to the office is closed and they've taped up a plastic barrier to the kitchen so I'm letting the pageant cats stroll around on their own accord, checking things out. It's not dusty or anything yet in the house, but they have all their goodies set up in our back bedroom if they want to get away from it all. I found them in the blanket storage drawer under our bed in the middle of the tile demo:
Elsa is a professional model!! She just did her first (and probably last, I was kidding about wanting her to be a model. SCIENTIST!) photo shoot for Bell Helmets. Our friend Niki works for them and she so kindly gifted Elsa a sassy Paul Frank helmet a few months back, which Elsa happily wore, we took a picture, sent it to Niki, who then gave it to the Bell executives (this is conjecture at this point by the way), who then freaked out because they found the PERFECT toddler model for their new catalog!

Fast forward to last Wednesday, they were doing the photo shoot in Huntington Beach and we were all supposed to come so they could photograph us as a family. I WAS SUPPOSED TO BE A MODEL TOO!! But then stupid science got in the way, and instead of becoming famous and frolicking in front of a camera while wearing a helmet, I had to deal with a clinical trial audit instead. Awesommmmmme.

So the two Karens stepped in and brought Jude and Henry to model along with Elsa instead. Which I guess was cool. I still get a free helmet out of it though so that's my consolation prize.
We are SOOOO close to getting our remodel started!! The house is feeling like we're about to move out of it, which is a little horrifying to think of, but then exciting again when I remember we're not moving but rather drastically improving our current living conditions and property value. Demo is *supposed* to start next Monday but may get pushed to Tuesday, thanks to the contractor's other project running a tad long. Cue annoyed-Liv-face.

This weekend is all about kitchen cabinet box building though and final clear out of the two+ rooms so the guys can come in and tear it all up. Jeff did the lion's share of the packing and hauling these past two weeks while I was at work, it was so nice coming home every day to progress that I didn't have to do! We'll be even though after this week. Actually, we're already even. I've done a ton of work on this whole thing already. Hmph!

It makes me a little sad to think about not seeing our vintage tile and scallop trim on the cabinets anymore, but at least we get to keep our original milk delivery door!

It was a totally cute vintage kitchen and I loved it from the very beginning, but it's time for an update, and a more useable kitchen with WAY better flooring.

I just noticed in this picture that I need to take down Jeff's pull-up bar. I really don't want that thing back in my new kitchen so maybe I'll hide it. Then again, strong man arms have proven to be quite useful lately, so maybe it can stay. I'll just spray paint it gold to match.
We used Rent-A-Green-Box again to help box everything up (we used them when we moved into this house- they are awesome and it is SUCH a great idea. I will never move crap ever again in cardboard boxes. These rule.) and they called us up a week early and asked if we would mind getting the boxes that day, for an extra week at no charge. Uh, YEAH! They also gave us a dolly to use and free labels that you can peel off and plant when you're done with them because they have snapdragon seeds in them. WHAT!? Amazing. I love them. That extra free week though was really great so we could do a little at a time. Elsa helped:
Just kidding. No she did not. She would take stuff out as I put stuff in. Baby doesn't understand rules of packing. At least she looked cool in her Robin Thicke pants and galoshes.
Oh beautiful dining room! How we have abused you. The table got pushed to the window wall and is covered in our glasses and dishes (easier than wrapping and boxing them, but fingers crossed for no earthquake or exploring Siamese!) and the boxes of flooring and other new items for the spaces are stacked in here.
I'm working at the kitchen island for now, but Mandy and Seth will be picking that sucker up tomorrow for their kitchen so I'll bring my circle table in here to work from next week. Not at all a distracting office. Sigh.
The back room is all prepped for tomorrow's cabinet building sleepover party that I tricked Jodi and Lynne into coming to. This is where you see my true Senior Coordinator qualities coming out. Taped on the wall is the cabinet overview detailing the pieces involved with each of the 12 cabinets. I went through the overview matching the Ikea product numbers from the sheet to the giant stack of boxes they delivered and labeled each box with the cabinet number it belongs to. Doors and cabinet fittings come after the cabinet boxes are installed so those are labeled and stacked in their respective piles out in Jeff's studio. I'll be assembling those next week as the construction progresses. Tomorrow we'll just be doing the cabinet boxes so hopefully it will be a snap. We have three sets of two matching cabinets, so I stacked those together so we can assemble them at the same time. Boom Boom!

Aaaaaaaaaanal! I know. But work like this is SO much more pleasant to do when you have all the proper tools you may need within reach. While being organized on a grid mat. I just got that handy cordless Black&Decker drill and love it. I also got a bunch of attachments for it that will replace the stupid little Ikea hex tools that give you massive hand cramps after like 3 screws. POWER! *grunt grunt*

You can see I already got one cabinet started. It's the bathroom sink cabinet! It's the Lillangen sink and cabinet combo from Ikea and the scale was just right for our mini half-bath that we're adding. It looks like this finished:

If Plan A works out, the leftover toe kick from the kitchen will be used to wrap these legs on this cabinet to make it look more built in. Plan A will not work though if the black/brown from the Ramsjo cabinets do not match the black/brown from the Lillangen cabinet. I have a feeling they won't, because the Ramsjo cabinets are really black, and this one is looking warmer. We'll see how funny it looks, and if the idea gets scrapped, Plan B comes into effect. Gold legs! So sexy.

I also sprayed the cabinet door pull gold to match, naturally. I love how they look so I won't be upset with Plan B at all, but Plan A would make cleaning the bathroom floor easier for Jeff.

More pics later of our cabinet building shenanigans! Unless Jodi was serious about bringing over wine, in which case we may just build one cabinet and I'll make Jan do the rest when he comes over on Sunday.Livhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14317949318871570517noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5385087340316373121.post-24618099024259217172014-03-15T12:37:00.000-07:002014-03-15T12:41:14.207-07:00Lighting redux

Someone needs to take the spray paint away from me before I lose ALL my brain cells. I went a little nuts on the gold spray paint recently, gilding my chippy old floral frogs into pretty new pencil holders, spray painting the sides of the granada cement tile samples and gluing felt to the bottom to make them into coasters and a trivet, and fancifying our Ikea lighting!

We got both sizes of the white powder coated metal Ranarp pendant lamps for the kitchen and to customize them a bit, I sprayed the insides of them gold. The rolled lip of the shade also got attacked with the gold paint, giving it a nice little border I think.

I love the brass bracket clamp thingy on top of the shade and the black and white cloth cord, exactly the look we're going for in the new kitchen. Clean lines and modern, but with a nod to the vintage.
And my sconces!! The gold capped light bulbs came in the mail this week and they are so awesome. I sprayed the white porcelain sockets black as I talked about doing here, and they came out matte black and to my liking. I love the little gold pull chains on them too, super happy with these, especially considering they were only $12.50 each!
Plus I've kind of already picked out everything else going into this remodel and need something new to shop for. STUFF! Just kidding, I'm probably going to make most of this stuff.

These tea towels from Gingiber are so my style. Animals, graphic but cute, black and white. Love 'em. Tea towels are easy to sew up though and might be a good opportunity for some design craftiness. A meeting of the Craft Club is in order.
Everything that Sarah Sherman Samuel does/is/wears is amazing. All of the products from her shop A Sunny Afternoon are so good. I want that spotted peach tea towel, and the hex cutting boards are rad. We're going to have a chunk of 1'x 6' butcher block left over from the kitchen, maybe I can ask our carpenters to chop it up into a bunch of hex cutting boards. I'll bribe them with treats.

I learned my lesson with my last potholders- you want to go black with these. Our old ones are looking pretty rough, and certainly not worthy of being displayed off a hook like these awesome storm clouds. I feel guilty ripping off someone's idea, but these would be super easy for me to make, and $55 on two pot holders is a little insane.

We're keeping one of the window ledges in the kitchen (above the sink) and will have some cleared off countertops for a little happy decoration, and these Hex Spora planters are my idea of perfection. The wood hexagon plates with a matte white ceramic pot holding a tiny cactus would make me grin like Elsa with a churro.

Sigh. Speaking of perfection... these vases. GAH! I love the colors, love that there are three.
Our massive collection of bamboo kitchen utensils are going to get the dip treatment for sure. It's coming. Picture via Poppytalk. That peachy pink is going to be my kitchen's accent color.

Our new washing machine is going to make me want to laundry constantly (I actually already really enjoy doing it) so these eco-towels to replace paper towels will help keep that washer running. Elsa is crazy messy and I feel guilty going through so many paper towels, so if we can at least reduce our usage by swapping in these, I'm for it.

And duh, we need a few awesome copper baskets to put these eco-towels in for easy access around the kitchen.

I think we're nixing the pot rack since we'll have enough cabinet drawer space for everything so I'm thinking this wraparound corner shelf would be awesome on the range wall to window wall corner. Perfect little perch for all my cute kitchen things above. And they can do that accent paint edge in a light peach! Want. Just need to make sure our corner is actually 90 degrees, otherwise it will be wonky and there will be no wonky in my new kitchen.
